Oral Radiology Residency Program - Introduction
The Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (OMFR) Residency Program is a two-year training program leading to a certificate in OMFR. Residents will be expected to perform and interpret conventional and advanced radiographic procedures such as Cone Beam CT. Images of MDCT, and MRI will be assigned for interpretation in courses. The program places strong emphasis on medical radiology rotation at University Hospital and Harborview medical center, where residents will receive training in advance imaging techniques (MDCT and MRI) and interpretation. There are opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Pediatric dentistry, bio-engineering and neuroradiology department. In addition, the program offers strong Radiation Physics training by the Radiation Physics department in medical school as well as research training by the renowned summer institute. Each resident is required to conduct a research project and are encouraged to complete a project for journal publication.
This is a two year 24 month program. A maximum of 2 students are enrolled each year. Students are expected to be full-time.
Programs Offered Two-year GME funded residency: This track is a residency program leading to a certificate in OMFR.
Successful completion of the Certificate can fulfill the formal education requirements of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (ABOMR) and residents who successfully complete the program will be eligible to apply for the ABOMR Board examination.
Program Overview, Goals and Objectives
The program mission is to prepare the oral and maxillofacial specialist for a career in academic or private radiology practice. Specialists trained in the program will acquire the following skills:
1. Prescribe, make or supervise the use of conventional and advanced imaging modalities in the oral and maxillofacial region.
2. Be able to determine appropriate imaging techniques based on clinical exam and medical/dental histories.
3. Conduct research related to oral and maxillofacial radiology. Advise OMFR researchers on modern imaging techniques and provide imaging facilities for related dental research.
4. Interpret radiographs and other diagnostic images. Serve as a consultant on oral and maxillofacial imaging problems in both medicine and dentistry.
5. Teach modern and traditional diagnostic imaging techniques.
6. Advise clinicians and researchers on radiation safety and protection.
7. Successfully complete the OMFR board exam.
Prospective applicants may visit the School and meet with any available students and staff, but informal or preliminary interviews with the faculty are not allowed.

1. OMFR programs do not participate in Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS), or National Matching Services (MATCH).

Admission Requirements
Qualified Candidates must have DDS or equivalent. Candidates are assessed for academic achievement and long-term potential. When candidates for the training program are evaluated, no adverse discriminatory judgments are made on the basis of race, sex, religion or nationally.
State Licensure Requirement
Successful candidates to this program will either hold a current Dentist License (issued by any U.S. State), or will be eligible to apply for a Dentist License (issued by any U.S. State) upon completion of dental school and before residency start date (July 1). Applicants who are appointed to the OMFR residency program are required to hold (at minimum) a Washington State Resident (limited/restricted) Dentist License effective at the beginning of residency training valid for duration of the residency appointment.
Candidate Interviews: Candidate Interview day is first Friday of December.
Approximately 2 weeks following the application deadline we will contact candidates to extend invitations to program interview day. Candidates interested in accepting the interview invitation should plan to be available for the full day.
Annual Stipends and Fringe Benefits
Two-year GME funded resident will receive annual stipends and fringe benefits and are not required to pay tuition. The University of Washington OMFR Residency program is a fully accredited by the ADA and sponsored by University of Washington Graduate Medical Education (GME). Candidates who are accepted to this program are subject to and privileged by the terms and conditions of the Resident Position Appointment (RPA) contract for University of Washington GME residents.
