University of North Carolina at Chapel HillAngela Broome, DDS, MS, Dip ABOMR, Program Director The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry Department of Diagnostic Sciences offers an accredited three-year postdoctoral program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology leading to a Master of Science degree. The program prepares qualified oral and maxillofacial radiology specialists for positions of responsibility in institutions of higher dental education or in the private practice setting. Participants gain experience in radiation physics, biology and protection and enhance their teaching and research skills. The program emphasizes understanding of imaging technologies and proficiency in radiologic interpretation. This includes training in the physics and interpretation of advanced imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance, medical and cone-beam computed tomography. The curriculum also includes microscopic and clinical pathology to strengthen the graduate student's understanding of clinical correlations with radiologic findings. The program requires the execution and completion of a Master’s-level research project, which supports the graduate student’s development of scholarly competency, including critical thinking skills and understanding of scientific methodology. Combined degrees with other supporting disciplines are possible at the Master’s and PhD-level. Upon completion of all requirements, each student is eligible for examination and certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. The Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Division of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences collaborates with other clinics and academic departments in the School of Dentistry and UNC Hospitals and on campus in the areas of health physics, computer sciences, medical physics, as well as other related biomedical and clinical sciences. The faculty has published extensively in the scientific and clinical literature and is actively involved in patient care.
