The University of Iowa College of Dentistry, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, offers a program of study leading to a certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and a Master of Science in Stomatology emphasizing Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. The program length is three years. Residents in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology will be based in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, College of Dentistry, but will spend part of their time in the Department of Radiology, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
The certificate program prepares students for private practice careers in oral and maxillofacial radiology. The Master's program has a research thesis requirement, and prepares residents for an academic or private practice career. Residents will receive training in interpretation of standard and advanced imaging modalities. With a strong emphasis in all aspects of oral and maxillofacial radiology, including radiation physics, radiation biology, radiation protection, technique, as well as interpretation, the program is designed to prepare students for board certification eligibility as set forth by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Study tracks leading to certification and a PhD are available. The College of Dentistry has a collegiate Dentist Scientist Program.
An applicant must have successfully completed an accredited program leading to the DDS or DMD degree, or foreign equivalent, and comply with the requirements for admission to the Graduate College of the University of Iowa. To be considered for admission, an applicant must have a cumulative grade-point average of 2.7 (4.0 scale). All applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test. Students from countries where English is not the principal language will present evidence of satisfactory performance on the proficiency Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Stipends of $16,000 for first year residents, $17,000 for second year and $18,000 for third year residents are available on a competitive basis. Final decisions on acceptance of any applicant meeting the requirements for admission will rest with the departmental faculty. A personal interview may be required. The deadline for applications for enrollment on July 1st is September 1st of the previous year.
